Landell Games

(Jan 2023 - Aug 2023)

I started at Landell Games as a level designer for my internship. By the end of my time there I ended up taking on more responsabilities than level design.

Here I talk a bit about everything that I did:

Level Designer

I designed 2 maps during my internship. The first one was a large map for 6 players, the second map was a small map for 6 players as well. For each design I researched, then sketched several proposal ideas that I would present to the creative lead. Once he had selected the idea he preferred I would start working on the paper prototype, iterating until it felt complete at which point I would start implementing the map in unity which was also iterated on until it was ready.

Technical Design

I worked with the programming team by helping with bug fixes, designing and implementing engine side solutions, performing tests, updating prefabs and cleaning the project from deprecated assets and prefabs.

When helping with bug fixes I mostly worked with elements inside Unity like the NavMesh, the composition of scenes or investigating prefabs.

The solutions I helped design were related to functionalities or plugins we could use in Unity. For example changing the use of planes and simple meshes for the TerrainTools plug-in, taking advantage of all the functionalities it has.

Environmental Art Direction

I was in charge of the look of the levels in the game, for this reason I worked with the art team to ensure the game map looked as good and cohesive as possible. FIrst I talked with the art leads to define the art style, then I wrote the Art Bible document for the artist to use as a guide. After that I made a list of all the assets for the map and updated it as feedback came and new maps were designed. Then I spoke with the art team to get time estimations and then I prioritized the items in the list and coordinated to get them on time.

Aside from this I would give individual feedback to artists when they asked for it and helped them getting the resources they needed in order to solve any issue that appeared.
